What a magical feeling
When you wake up one day
Expecting it to be like any other
Perhaps you’ll eat a good meal
Or see a beautiful sunset
But that is all that you expect
And then, you encounter something
That changes your life.
I knew Broadway shows are AMAZING. And I knew I was going to watch one in New York. It didn’t take me long to decide which one I wanted to see. My Fair Lady, of course.
We’ve all made decisions that we are proud of…and mine was to be stubborn about watching only this play. There were, of course, others that were showing around the same time. Cheaper ones, with more shows. I stayed stubborn…and it changed my life.
I couldn’t find any cheap tickets for My Fair Lady and so I put off buying tickets for ‘another day’. I got lucky though, because when I was in the city one day, I noticed that you can buy same-day tickets at half price.
So on a rainy morning, I stood in line and bought such a ticket for $100. I was really excited.
I happened to find a very old copy of Four plays by George Bernard Shaw at a bookshop the same day, which included Pygmalion (which, for those of you who don’t know, is the play that My Fair Lady is based on).
Now, I was really excited.
And late to the play. I ran.
The seats were great and the show started a few moments after I arrived. I don’t know how to tell you how amazing it was. It was so well done and I was left awe-struck. I didn’t know such talent even existed!
I was so happy when I walked out of the theater. The evening was beautiful too. The clouds had gone and it was a clear night. The streets of New York never looked prettier.
I realize now that I cannot put that feeling into words well enough and so you will have just have to believe me when I tell you it was so so great. In that moment I felt sorry for anyone who didn’t get a chance to witness what I did; for anyone who hasn’t read George Bernard Shaw; for anyone who doesn’t appreciate art and theater.
Because, from that point on, I certainly did.
